Noise-Events in Amsterdam

Noise music emerged from early 20th-century avant-garde movements like Futurism, later crystallizing into a distinct genre through 1970s industrial and Japanese experimental scenes. Eschewing traditional melody, harmony, and song structure, it utilizes extreme feedback, distortion pedals, contact microphones, and circuit-bent electronics to create dense walls of abrasive sound. The genre is characterized by aperiodic rhythms or a complete lack of metrical consistency, resulting in a sonic mood that ranges from highly aggressive and confrontational to profoundly immersive and cathartic. Semantically, noise sits at the extreme end of the experimental spectrum, challenging the boundaries between music and non-musical sound while directly influencing genres like power electronics and industrial metal.
