Sitar-Events dieses Wochenende in Amsterdam

The sitar is a plucked stringed instrument central to Hindustani classical music, originating in medieval India through the synthesis of Persian lutes and ancient Indian veenas. Characterized by its distinctive sympathetic strings and gourd resonator, the music utilizes complex raga melodic structures and rhythmic tala cycles. Performances typically transition from a slow, meditative alap exploration into intricate, high-tempo rhythmic sections accompanied by the tabla, evoking moods ranging from deep contemplation to ecstatic virtuosity. As a cornerstone of South Asian soundscapes, it significantly influenced 1960s Western psychedelic rock and modern world fusion genres, maintaining a semantic link between traditional spiritual practice and contemporary global instrumental music.
