Bouzouki-Events dieses Wochenende in Athen

Bouzouki music is a cornerstone of Greek popular culture, originating from urban subcultures in the early 20th century via the evolution of ancient long-necked lute traditions. The genre is defined by the sharp, metallic timbre of the bouzouki instrument, typically supported by the baglamas and acoustic guitar to establish a driving rhythmic foundation. It utilizes distinctive time signatures such as the 9/8 Zeibekiko and the fast 2/4 Hasapiko, creating an evocative mood that oscillates between profound melancholy and celebratory exuberance. Closely related to Rebetiko and later mainstream Laïko, this music reflects a complex synthesis of Byzantine melodic modes, Middle Eastern maqams, and Western harmonic progressions.
