Middle Eastern Traditional-Events in Athen

Emerging from the historical intersections of the Levant, Egypt, and the Arabian Peninsula, Middle Eastern traditional music is defined by the sophisticated melodic system of maqamat and intricate rhythmic cycles known as iqa'at. Typical instrumentation features the fretless oud, the zither-like qanun, the end-blown nay flute, and percussive elements like the darbuka or riq. The music emphasizes microtonal ornaments and modal improvisation, often seeking to induce a state of emotional ecstasy known as tarab. While sharing ancestral roots with Persian and Turkish classical traditions, it maintains a distinct identity through its specific quarter-tone tunings and call-and-response vocal structures that bridge ancient folk heritage with formal courtly compositions.
