Bullerengue-Events in Barcelona

Bullerengue is a traditional Afro-Colombian musical style and dance originating from the Caribbean coastal regions, primarily preserved by Maroon communities. The genre is characterized by a deep-rooted call-and-response vocal structure led by a female singer, accompanied by the driving polyrhythms of the tambor alegre and tambor llamador drums. Its rhythmic foundation often features a steady, syncopated pulse punctuated by hand-clapping and the metallic scrape of the guache, creating a communal and ritualistic atmosphere. Historically linked to fertility rites and celebratory gatherings, Bullerengue maintains a profound semantic relationship with Cumbia and Chalupa while remaining distinct through its exclusive reliance on percussion and voice rather than melodic instrumentation or modern electronic elements.
