Merengue-Events in Barcelona

Originating in the Dominican Republic during the mid-19th century, merengue is a vibrant genre characterized by its rapid 2/4 time signature and driving syncopation. Traditional ensembles, known as perico ripiao, typically feature the accordion, tambora drum, and güira scraper, while modern orchestral variants incorporate brass sections and electric bass. The music maintains an infectious, high-energy mood designed specifically for social dancing, often centered around a recurring five-beat rhythmic pattern called the quintuillo. Semantically, it serves as a foundational pillar of Caribbean music, sharing historical roots with the contradanza while directly influencing the evolution of contemporary Latin pop and bachata.
