Murga-Events in Barcelona

Murga is a theatrical and musical genre originating in the Rio de la Plata region, primarily Uruguay and Argentina, during the early 20th century as a central component of Carnival celebrations. Characterized by its energetic percussion ensemble—consisting of the bombo, platillos, and redoblante—it features large vocal choruses that perform satirical and poetic lyrics often addressing social and political issues. The rhythmic structure is driven by the syncopated 'marcha camión' or 'marcha de bombo,' maintaining a moderate to fast tempo that evokes a festive and community-oriented mood. Historically influenced by Spanish zarzuela and African Candombe rhythms, Murga serves as a vital bridge between traditional folk performance and contemporary urban protest music.
