Nova Canco-Events in Barcelona

Nova Cançó emerged in Catalonia during the late 1950s as an artistic and social movement aimed at normalizing the Catalan language and identity through music under the repressive Francoist regime. Drawing heavy influence from the French chanson tradition, the genre typically features acoustic instrumentation such as classical guitar and piano, prioritizing sophisticated lyrical content and expressive vocal delivery over complex production. The music is characterized by its moderate tempos, intimate and earnest moods, and a poetic focus that positions it within the broader European protest song and folk-pop categories. This genre served as a vital vehicle for cultural resistance, bridging the gap between traditional folk roots and modern singer-songwriter aesthetics to foster a distinct regional identity.
