Rhythm and blues, commonly known as R&B, emerged in the 1940s within African American communities, blending elements of jazz, gospel, and the blues into a distinctively soulful sound. The genre is defined by its polished production, emotive vocal performances, and a strong, consistent backbeat that emphasizes the second and fourth beats of a measure. Instrumentation typically spans from traditional drums and bass to modern synthesizers and drum machines, creating a mood that ranges from deep melancholy to celebratory joy. Functioning as a pivotal influence on rock and roll and hip-hop, contemporary R&B maintains a high level of danceability through its infectious syncopation, smooth melodies, and sophisticated harmonic arrangements.
