Zarzuela-Events diesen Monat in Barcelona

Zarzuela is a distinctive Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that originated in the 17th century at the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid, blending spoken dialogue with operatic singing and dance. Typically scored for a full orchestra frequently supplemented by classical guitar and castanets, the genre encompasses both "género grande" and "género chico" formats. Its rhythmic foundation often draws from traditional Iberian folk dances like the jota and seguidilla, maintaining a vibrant and theatrical tempo that balances dramatic intensity with lighthearted comedy. While closely related to the Viennese operetta and the German Singspiel, Zarzuela remains unique for its deep rootedness in Spanish cultural themes and vernacular musical idioms.
