Art Song-Events in Berlin

Art song is a Western classical music genre originating in the late 18th century, primarily designed for performance by a solo vocalist accompanied by a piano. Distinguishable from folk or popular songs, it emphasizes the intricate setting of poetic texts where the instrumental accompaniment serves as a partner in interpreting the lyrics rather than mere support. The tempo and rhythm are highly flexible, prioritizing expressive phrasing and emotional nuance to reflect the mood of the literature, which ranges from profound melancholy to joyous exaltation. This genre serves as a sophisticated bridge between literature and music, with its most prominent iterations being the German Lied and the French mélodie.
