Free Improvisation-Events in Berlin

Free improvisation, also known as non-idiomatic improvisation, emerged in the mid-20th century as a radical departure from the structured constraints of jazz and classical music, prioritizing spontaneous creation over pre-established frameworks. Typical instrumentation is highly varied, ranging from traditional woodwinds and strings to found objects and modular synthesis, often employing extended techniques to produce unconventional timbres and textures. The genre is characterized by its unpredictable tempo and irregular rhythms, shifting between moments of sparse silence and intense sonic density through intuitive dialogue between performers. Semantically, it occupies a space adjacent to free jazz and avant-garde composition but remains distinct through its radical commitment to discarding all idiomatic conventions.
