Handpan-Events in Berlin

The handpan genre emerged in the early 2000s following the creation of the Hang instrument in Switzerland, blending melodic and percussive elements into a singular acoustic experience. Typically featuring a convex steel vessel played with the hands, the music is defined by rich overtones, hypnotic polyphonic textures, and a contemplative, ethereal mood. Rhythms are often fluid and circular, moving at slow to moderate tempos that emphasize resonance over aggressive drive, making it a staple of ambient and meditative soundscapes. While sharing physical origins with the Caribbean steelpan, handpan music occupies a unique semantic space between contemporary folk, New Age, and world fusion.
