Tarantella-Events in Berlin

The tarantella is a traditional folk music and dance form originating from Southern Italy, specifically the regions of Puglia, Campania, and Calabria. Traditionally performed to cure a hysterical condition known as tarantism, the genre is characterized by a rapid, driving rhythm typically set in 6/8 or 12/8 time signatures. Its instrumentation often features the tamburello, accordion, mandolin, and acoustic guitar, creating a frenetic and euphoric atmosphere. While it maintains deep roots in historical ritual, the tarantella remains a cornerstone of Italian cultural identity, sharing rhythmic kinship with other Mediterranean folk traditions like the saltarello and serving as a progenitor to various regional dance styles.
