Choral music is a collective vocal genre performed by a group of singers known as a choir or chorus, typically organized into voice parts such as soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. Originating from ancient religious traditions and maturing through the Renaissance and Baroque eras, it focuses on harmony and polyphony, often utilizing the human voice as the primary or sole instrument. The mood of choral works spans a wide spectrum from the ethereal and meditative to the grand and celebratory, with rhythms that are frequently dictated by the meter of the text. Semantically, it functions as a bridge between liturgical practices and classical orchestral traditions, influencing modern gospel and contemporary a cappella music.
