Muzica Lautareasca-Events in Bukarest

Muzica lăutărească is a traditional genre from Romania performed by the Lăutari, a professional class of hereditary musicians primarily of Romani descent. It centers on virtuoso performances utilizing the violin, accordion, and cimbalom, often accompanied by double bass and woodwinds. The music is characterized by intricate ornamentation and complex rhythmic structures, oscillating between the melancholic longing of slow ballads and the high-energy pulse of communal dance forms like the hora. This genre maintains a deeply organic and soulful character that focuses heavily on improvisation, oral transmission, and evocative emotional storytelling within the Romanian cultural landscape, while serving as a precursor to modern pop-inflected Manele.
