Charanga-Events in Fort Lauderdale

Charanga is a Cuban dance music genre that emerged in the early 20th century as an evolution of the Danzón, characterized by its distinctive orquesta francesa instrumentation. Unlike the brass-heavy ensembles of Son, a charanga ensemble features a wooden flute and violins, accompanied by a rhythm section consisting of piano, double bass, timbales, and güiro. The genre is defined by a bright, sophisticated mood and syncopated rhythms that laid the foundation for the Mambo and Cha-cha-chá, bridging the gap between European salon music and African-influenced Cuban street sounds. Today, it remains a vital component of Latin music taxonomy, representing an elegant, high-energy fusion of strings and percussion that contrasts with the grit of salsa dura.
