Griot-Events in Hamburg

Griot music, or Jeliya, originates from the hereditary caste of poet-musicians and oral historians within the Mande societies of West Africa, primarily Mali, Guinea, and Senegal. This traditional genre is characterized by intricate instrumentation, featuring the 21-string kora harp, the balafon xylophone, and the ngoni lute, often accompanied by virtuosic, melismatic vocals. The music employs complex polyrhythmic cycles and a narrative-driven structure that serves to preserve genealogies, historical epics, and social praise. While deeply rooted in ancient acoustic traditions, griot music remains a living art form that maintains a profound semantic connection to contemporary blues and jazz, conveying a mood of dignity, wisdom, and communal celebration.
