Pontian Folk-Events heute Abend in Komotini

Pontian folk music originates from the ethnic Greek communities of the Pontus region along the Black Sea coast, characterized by its distinctive use of the Kementzes, a three-stringed bowed lyra. The genre is defined by driving, complex rhythmic structures—frequently in 5/8 or 9/8 time signatures—accompanied by the davul drum and tulum bagpipes. Its mood oscillates between deep, melancholic laments reflecting the community's history of displacement and high-energy, frenetic dance tunes that emphasize collective movement. While semantically distinct from mainstream Hellenic folk, it shares a modal framework with Byzantine music and rhythmic parallels with neighboring Anatolian and Caucasian traditions, maintaining a unique cultural identity within the broader Balkan and Eastern Mediterranean landscape.
