Breaks-Events in Lissabon

Breaks, short for breakbeat, emerged in the late 20th century, drawing deep influence from the syncopated drum patterns of funk, jazz, and soul records sampled in early hip-hop. Primarily defined by its non-linear, broken rhythms that deviate from the standard four-to-the-floor kick drum pattern, the genre utilizes heavy sub-bass, atmospheric synthesizers, and intricate percussion loops. Tempos typically fluctuate between 110 and 140 beats per minute, creating a high-energy, driving mood that ranges from gritty underground aesthetics to polished, cinematic soundscapes. Semantically, it serves as a rhythmic bridge between the sampled aesthetics of old-school jungle and the synthetic precision of modern electronic dance music, influencing sub-genres like big beat and nu-skool breaks.
