Fado De Coimbra-Events in Lissabon

Fado de Coimbra is a traditional Portuguese musical genre that emerged in the late 19th century within the academic circles of the University of Coimbra. Unlike the Lisbon variety, it is exclusively performed by men, traditionally students or alumni dressed in black academic robes, and typically features a duo of the teardrop-shaped Portuguese guitar and a classical nylon-string guitar. The music is characterized by a slower, more refined tempo and a sophisticated melodic structure that emphasizes poetic themes of love, student life, and the nostalgic longing known as saudade. This sub-tradition maintains a strong connection to European troubadour styles and bel canto, resulting in a performance that is more serenading and emotionally resonant than its metropolitan counterpart.
