Morna-Events in Lissabon

Originating in Cape Verde during the 18th century, Morna is a soulful musical genre and national symbol characterized by its deep sense of melancholy and longing, known locally as sodade. Traditionally performed at a slow tempo in 4/4 time, its sound is defined by acoustic instrumentation, featuring the cavaquinho, acoustic guitar, violin, and occasionally piano or clarinet. The genre maintains a close semantic relationship with Portuguese Fado and Brazilian Modinha, sharing a focus on poetic lyrics and expressive vocal delivery. While primarily a contemplative and emotional style, its syncopated rhythmic undercurrent reflects a unique blend of African and European influences that distinguishes it from other Lusophone folk traditions.
