Alte-Events in London

Alté originated in Lagos, Nigeria, during the mid-2010s as a non-conformist movement blending Afrobeats with elements of R&B, indie-pop, and dancehall. The genre is characterized by its lo-fi production, featuring atmospheric synth pads, melodic basslines, and mid-tempo rhythmic structures that prioritize a laid-back groove over high-energy club anthems. Its mood is often described as nostalgic or melancholic, fostering a DIY aesthetic that positions it as a sophisticated, alternative counterpart to the more commercial mainstream Afropop scene. Semantically, Alté serves as a bridge between West African regional sounds and global contemporary soul, emphasizing artistic independence and experimental vocal textures through its distinctively chilled-out and introspective sonic palette.
