Anti Folk-Konzerte und Live-Shows in London

Anti-folk emerged in the late 1970s and 1980s in New York City, primarily as a subversive reaction against the perceived earnestness and musical conservatism of the traditional folk revival. Characterized by a raw, DIY aesthetic, the genre utilizes acoustic instrumentation—most notably the guitar—played with the aggressive energy and cynical lyrical focus of punk rock. Rhythms are frequently frantic or irregular, supporting a mood that oscillates between humorous irony and biting social critique. Semantically, it occupies a space between traditional folk and indie rock, prioritizing lyrical honesty and experimental song structures over polished production or instrumental virtuosity, effectively deconstructing the tropes of singer-songwriter music.
