Brazilian Percussion-Events in London

Brazilian percussion encompasses a diverse array of rhythmic traditions rooted in Afro-Brazilian heritage, specifically evolving from styles like Samba-reggae, Maracatu, and Candomblé ritual music. The instrumentation is characterized by a specialized ensemble including the deep-toned surdo, the metallic agogô, and the friction-based cuíca, which collectively produce intricate, layered polyrhythms. Generally upbeat and communal in mood, these performances feature heavy syncopation and tempos that range from moderate processions to high-velocity festive speeds typical of street Carnival. Semantically, this genre provides the foundational rhythmic architecture for mainstream Brazilian styles such as Bossa Nova and MPB while remaining a distinct, instrumentally focused discipline centered on the raw power of the drum circle.
