Ceilidh-Events in London

Ceilidh music is a vibrant folk tradition originating from the Gaelic social gatherings of Scotland and Ireland, specifically designed to accompany communal step dancing. It features a lively instrumentation typically comprising the fiddle, accordion, tin whistle, and piano, often bolstered by a rhythmic acoustic guitar or drum kit. The genre is characterized by structured dance forms like jigs in 6/8 time and reels in 4/4 time, maintaining a brisk, steady tempo to guide participants through complex footwork. Its mood is inherently festive and high-spirited, serving as a functional bridge between traditional Celtic melodies and interactive social performance, distinguished from static folk by its rigorous rhythmic drive and emphasis on group synchronicity.
