Field Recording-Events in London

Field recording, or phonography, emerged from the mid-20th-century avant-garde and musique concrète movements as a method of capturing environmental sounds outside the traditional studio environment. Utilizing portable microphones and digital recorders, practitioners document everything from urban soundscapes to biological activity, focusing on the inherent textures of the natural and industrial world rather than traditional musical scales. The genre typically lacks a fixed tempo or harmonic structure, instead prioritizing immersive atmospheres and aleatory rhythms that evoke a specific sense of place or temporal passage. It serves as a foundational element for ambient music and acoustic ecology, bridging the gap between documentary audio and abstract sonic art through the elevation of found sound.
