Ghazal-Events dieses Wochenende in London

Originating from 7th-century Arabic poetry before flourishing in Persia and the Indian subcontinent, Ghazal is a sophisticated vocal genre centered on the poetic expression of longing, loss, and metaphysical love. The musical performance typically features a lead vocalist accompanied by traditional instruments like the harmonium, tabla, and sarangi, though modern iterations often incorporate strings and keyboards. Its rhythmic structure is generally defined by slow-to-moderate cycles such as Dadra or Keherwa, which remain subservient to the intricate melodic phrasing and lyrical nuances. Emotionally resonant and deeply contemplative, the genre functions as a bridge between classical Indian ragas and contemporary semi-classical styles, maintaining a primary focus on the transformative power of the written word.
