Oud-Events in London

Originating in ancient Mesopotamia and the Middle East, the oud is a fretless, short-necked lute that serves as the central melodic pillar in Arabic, Turkish, and Persian musical traditions. The genre is characterized by the use of complex microtonal modes known as maqamat and intricate rhythmic cycles called iqa’at, often performed as a solo improvisational taqsim or within a traditional takht ensemble. Its sonic profile is deeply resonant and woody, offering a mood that shifts from profoundly melancholic and introspective to vibrant and rhythmically driving when accompanied by percussion like the darbuka. Historically recognized as the ancestor of the European lute, the oud maintains a vital semantic link between classical Eastern heritage and contemporary global folk traditions.
