Sega-Events in London

Sega is a vibrant musical tradition originating from Mauritius and the surrounding Indian Ocean islands, emerging from the folk practices of enslaved African and Malagasy populations. It is characterized by its signature ternary 6/8 rhythmic structure and the use of traditional acoustic instruments such as the ravanne frame drum, the maravanne rattle, and the metallic triangle. The genre typically features a call-and-response vocal pattern, a moderate to fast tempo, and a celebratory, highly danceable atmosphere that expresses both communal joy and historical narratives of resilience. While rooted in acoustic heritage, modern iterations incorporate electric instrumentation, bridging the gap between traditional folk roots and contemporary Afro-diasporic pop styles like Maloya and reggae.
