Semba-Events in London

Semba is a traditional style of music and dance from Angola, originating in the mid-20th century within the urban centers of Luanda. Characterized by a syncopated 2/4 or 4/4 rhythm, it typically features acoustic guitars, the dikanza scraper, and a driving percussion section that creates a festive yet often nostalgic atmosphere. As a precursor to modern genres like kizomba and a relative to Brazilian samba, semba emphasizes storytelling through lyrics that address social and political themes with a distinctive swing. The genre serves as a vital cultural expression, blending indigenous rhythmic structures with colonial influences to produce a sound that is both deeply rooted and dynamically evolving.
