City Pop-Events in Los Angeles

Emerging in Japan during the late 1970s and peaking throughout the 1980s, City Pop reflects the nation’s economic boom and a shift toward cosmopolitan, urban lifestyles. The genre seamlessly blends elements of jazz-fusion, disco, and funk with polished electronic synthesis, typically featuring sophisticated slap bass, lush brass sections, and smooth synthesizers. Its characteristic mid-tempo, 4/4 rhythms emphasize syncopated grooves and high-fidelity production values designed for late-night driving or coastal leisure. Evoking a breezy, nostalgic, and affluent mood, City Pop acts as a distinct Japanese evolution of Western adult contemporary and yacht rock, focusing on themes of romance and modern city life.
