Huayno-Events in Los Angeles

Huayno is a foundational genre of Andean music and dance originating from the Peruvian highlands, blending indigenous pre-Columbian traditions with Spanish colonial influences. It is characterized by a distinctive 2/4 duple meter featuring a syncopated long-short-short rhythmic pattern, typically performed on traditional instruments like the quena, charango, Andean harp, and violin. The mood often balances high-energy, festive celebration with a deep, melancholic undertone, a duality that reflects the social history of the Quechua and Aymara peoples. As a primary ancestor to contemporary styles like chicha and cumbia andina, huayno remains a central cultural expression across Peru, Bolivia, and northern Argentina.
