Hurdy Gurdy-Events in Los Angeles

Emerging from medieval European traditions, hurdy-gurdy music is defined by its namesake instrument, a mechanical fiddle that utilizes a hand-cranked wheel to rub against strings. The sound is characterized by a continuous harmonic drone produced by dedicated strings, paired with a melodic line played on a keyboard and a rhythmic buzzing bridge known as the trompette. This combination creates a rich, hypnotic texture that bridges the gap between ancient early music, traditional folk dances like the bourrée, and modern experimental drone. Its rhythmic complexity relies on the player's percussive cranking technique, resulting in a rustic yet sophisticated sonic profile that evokes a deeply historic and communal atmosphere.
