Punta-Events in Los Angeles

Punta is a vibrant Garifuna music and dance style originating from the Caribbean coasts of Honduras, Belize, and Guatemala, deeply rooted in West African heritage and Indigenous Arawak traditions. Characterized by its distinctive 2/4 or 4/4 syncopated polyrhythmic patterns, the genre traditionally utilizes hardwood drums called Garawoun, turtle shells, and maracas to create a fast-paced, festive, and highly energetic atmosphere. It serves as a vital expression of cultural identity during significant celebrations and social gatherings, effectively conveying a collective mood of communal joy, spiritual resilience, and shared history. The modern evolution into the Punta Rock subgenre successfully integrated electric guitars and keyboards while maintaining the core rhythmic intensity, bridging ancestral folk practices with contemporary Caribbean popular music styles.
