Torch Song-Events in Los Angeles

Originating in the early 20th century, the torch song is a sentimental subgenre of jazz and traditional pop that centers on the theme of unrequited or lost love. Typically performed by a solo vocalist, often female, the genre utilizes instrumentation such as piano, orchestral strings, or a subdued jazz combo to emphasize emotional vulnerability. The rhythmic structure is characterized by slow, rubato-heavy tempos and a melancholic atmosphere that bridges the gap between blues-inflected balladry and theatrical cabaret performance. Its semantic roots lie in the phrase "carrying a torch," symbolizing a persistent longing that defines its lyrical content and soulful, expressive vocal delivery.
