Classical Countertenor-Events dieses Wochenende in Madrid

Classical countertenor is a vocal genre centered on male singers who use falsetto or head voice to perform in the range traditionally assigned to female altos or mezzo-sopranos. Emerging from medieval liturgical traditions and flourishing during the Baroque era as an alternative to castrati, the genre relies on orchestral or chamber instrumentation like the harpsichord and lute. Its rhythmic character is defined by the rigid structures of classical composition, yet it often incorporates expressive rubato and intricate melisma. The mood is typically ethereal and technically virtuosic, bridging the gap between historical early music and contemporary operatic performance while maintaining a distinct, high-register masculine timbre that separates it from standard tenor or baritone classifications.
