Gaita-Events in Madrid

Gaita, also known as Gaita Colombiana, is a traditional folk genre originating from the Caribbean coast of Colombia, born from the cultural fusion of Indigenous, African, and Spanish traditions. The music is defined by the call-and-response interplay between the gaita hembra and gaita macho flutes, accompanied by heavy percussion like the alegre drum, llamador, and maracas. Characterized by complex, syncopated polyrhythms and earthy, grounded melodies, the genre maintains a celebratory yet spiritual mood often associated with communal rituals and festive dance. As a foundational ancestor to modern Cumbia, Gaita remains a vital expression of Afro-Indigenous heritage, bridging ancestral ceremonial sounds with rhythmic structures that influenced many Latin American tropical styles.
