Norteno-Events in Madrid

Originating in the late 19th century across the northern border regions of Mexico and the Southwestern United States, Norteño is a cornerstone of Mexican regional music that fused European folk traditions with local styles. The genre is characterized by its prominent use of the button accordion and the twelve-string bajo sexto, often accompanied by a tololoche and snare drums. Rhythmically, it draws heavily from polka, waltz, and mazurka structures, typically performed at a brisk, danceable tempo that supports both celebratory instrumentals and narrative lyrical ballads known as corridos. While it shares a lineage with Tejano and Conjunto, Norteño maintains a distinct rustic identity rooted in rural storytelling and working-class cultural expression.
