Polka-Events in Madrid

Polka is a vivacious folk dance and music genre that originated in mid-19th-century Bohemia, quickly spreading across Europe and the Americas to become a ballroom staple. The genre is defined by its brisk 2/4 time signature and the characteristic "oom-pah" rhythmic drive, typically performed at a lively tempo between 120 and 160 beats per minute. Traditional instrumentation prominently features the accordion or concertina, supported by a brass section of tubas and trumpets alongside woodwinds like the clarinet. Its energetic and celebratory mood has fostered deep semantic links to various regional folk traditions, eventually influencing the development of Western swing and Tex-Mex conjunto music.
