Emerging in France and across Southern Europe during the early 1960s, yé-yé is a style of upbeat pop music characterized by its youthful, innocent, and often playful aesthetic. The genre's name derives from the "yeah! yeah!" exclamations popularized by British beat groups, signaling its semantic bridge between traditional European chanson and Anglo-American rock and roll. Instrumentation typically features clean electric guitars, bright organs, and steady 4/4 percussion, often supporting high-pitched, melodic female vocals. This genre prioritized radio-friendly hooks and fashionable presentation, reflecting the burgeoning youth culture of the postwar era while maintaining a polished, television-ready production style that distinguished it from grittier rock movements.
