Laiko-Events in Mykonos

Laïkó is a foundational genre of Greek popular music that emerged in the mid-20th century, evolving from the urban underground roots of Rebetiko into a more polished, mainstream form. Central to its sound is the bouzouki, supported by instrumentation such as the baglamas, guitar, and accordion, which create a distinctive blend of Eastern melodic modes and Western harmonic structures. The genre is characterized by rhythmic diversity, frequently employing traditional time signatures like the 9/8 Zeibekiko and the 2/4 Hasapiko to convey moods ranging from deep melancholic longing to vibrant, festive energy. Semantically, it serves as the cultural bridge between ancestral rural folk traditions and contemporary Mediterranean pop music.
