Gqom-Events in New York City

Gqom is a minimalist and raw subgenre of house music that emerged from the townships of Durban, South Africa, during the early 2010s. Characterized by its dark, hypnotic, and percussive nature, the genre typically utilizes heavy, broken-beat rhythms and deep basslines produced through digital software. Unlike its predecessor kwaito, gqom eschews melodic complexity and traditional song structures in favor of repetitive, haunting vocal chants and industrial textures. Its aggressive yet trancelike atmosphere provides a stark, rhythmic intensity that has transitioned from underground car-stereo culture to international electronic dance floors, influencing global experimental club music.
