Grupera-Events in New York City

Grupera, or Onda Grupera, emerged in rural Mexico during the 1970s as a hybrid genre blending regional Mexican folk styles with modern pop and rock elements. Characterized by its use of electric guitars, synthesizers, and drum machines alongside traditional structures, it typically features a moderate 4/4 rhythm influenced by cumbia and ranchera. The mood is predominantly romantic and nostalgic, often focusing on themes of love and heartbreak delivered through smooth vocal melodies. While it shares roots with Tejano and norteño music, grupera is distinguished by its heavy reliance on electronic keyboards and a more commercial, ballad-oriented production style that peaked in mainstream popularity during the 1990s.
