Instrumental Soul-Events in New York City

Instrumental soul originated in the 1960s as a specialized branch of rhythm and blues, focusing on the grooves and melodic capabilities of session ensembles like Booker T. & the M.G.'s. The genre is characterized by a prominent use of the Hammond B3 organ, rhythmic electric guitar, and a steady, syncopated backbeat provided by a tight rhythm section. Typically maintaining a moderate tempo, the music prioritizes a 'pocket' feel that bridges the gap between traditional soul and jazz-funk. The mood ranges from sophisticated and smooth to gritty and earthy, emphasizing musical interplay over vocal narratives while retaining the emotional warmth and harmonic structures inherent to the broader soul music tradition.
