Jug Band-Events in New York City

Jug band music emerged in the early 1900s within African American communities in the Southern United States, particularly in Louisville and Memphis. These ensembles utilized a mix of traditional and improvised homemade instruments, such as the eponymous jug for bass tones alongside washboards, kazoos, and banjos. The genre features syncopated rhythms and moderate tempos, often blending elements of blues, jazz, and ragtime to create a festive and humorous atmosphere. Historically serving as a raw, street-level precursor to later folk-revival and skiffle movements, the style remains defined by its earthy, acoustic quality and high-spirited, communal performance nature.
