Latin Ska-Events in New York City

Originating in the late 1980s across Latin America, Latin ska is a vibrant fusion that blends traditional Jamaican ska rhythms with diverse regional influences like cumbia, rock en español, and salsa. The instrumentation typically features a driving rock foundation of electric guitar and bass, punctuated by a powerful brass section and supplemented with Latin percussion such as congas or cowbells. Characterized by a high-energy, syncopated "skank" rhythm and fast tempos, the genre often evokes a festive yet socially conscious mood, reflecting its roots in urban youth movements. This genre serves as a cultural bridge, evolving from the global Third Wave ska movement while maintaining a distinct linguistic and rhythmic identity that separates it from its Anglo-American counterparts.
