Meme Rap-Events in New York City

Meme rap originated in the early 2010s as an internet-born subgenre of hip hop, proliferating through platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud where creators prioritized viral humor and irony over traditional industry standards. The instrumentation typically utilizes digital trap production, featuring heavy 808 basslines, repetitive synthesizers, and lo-fi aesthetics that mirror mainstream rap but with absurdist or satirical lyrical content. Rhythms are generally structured around standard 4/4 time signatures with moderate to fast tempos, maintaining high energy and danceability while the mood shifts between self-deprecating and intentionally provocative. Semantically, the genre functions as a parody of traditional hip hop tropes, bridging the gap between professional music production and DIY internet comedy culture.
