Son Jarocho-Events in New York City

Son Jarocho is a regional folk musical style from Veracruz, Mexico, originating from the historical fusion of Spanish, African, and indigenous cultures along the Gulf Coast. The genre traditionally centers on the jarana, a small eight-stringed guitar, the melodic requinto jarocho, and the arpa jarocha, while the rhythmic heartbeat is provided by percussive footwork on a wooden platform called a tarima. It is characterized by complex syncopation and festive, improvisational lyrical structures often delivered through call-and-response vocals. Son Jarocho maintains a vibrant, communal mood, serving as a foundational pillar of Mexican folk identity that bridges traditional agrarian rhythms with contemporary acoustic world music.
