Über Turntablism
Emerging from 1970s hip hop culture, turntablism is the art of manipulating vinyl records and crossfaders to create entirely new percussive patterns and rhythmic compositions. This genre transforms the turntable from a playback device into a legitimate musical instrument through techniques like scratching, beat juggling, and phasing. Performers utilize dual turntables, mixers, and slipmats to execute complex technical feats that demand precision, resulting in a percussive mood that bridges the gap between traditional DJing and avant-garde sound collage. Deeply rooted in funk and breakbeats, it remains a foundational pillar of hip hop culture that emphasizes live, manual sound manipulation over simple playback.
